Donate food to help the survivors and volunteers.

By Jen Barnett

Dozens of businesses, churches and community organizations are collecting food and water for survivors of the April 27 tornadoes as well as volunteers and rescue personnel. These donations will help people around Birmingham, as well as Tuscaloosa, Cullman and other affected areas across Alabama.

Most are calling for non-perishable foods, and when you are in need, any donation is a bounty. Still, we know how drained our bodies can feel after subsisting too long on cold, canned green beans and Vienna sausages, so we wanted to present a few healthier options. Non-perishable doesn’t have to mean unpalatable.

We present 25 ideas for non-perishable items that will provide high-quality proteins, good carbs and healthy fats — plus offer a little variety to the scores of canned peaches coming their way. Restore them body and soul with these delicious choices:

  1. Canned or pouched tuna
  2. Canned salmon
  3. Canned chicken
  4. Canned black beans
  5. Canned chickpeas or lentils
  6. Amy’s Kitchen soups and cookies
  7. Salsa (whole grain chips optional)
  8. Smart Balance or natural peanut butter
  9. Jarred spaghetti sauce (and pasta)
  10. Kashi cereals and snack bars
  11. Nuts and nut mixes
  12. Dark chocolate
  13. Shelf-stable milk
  14. Oatmeal and grits
  15. Microwave popcorn

  20. Minute white rice
  21. Raisins and other dried fruit

After helping distribute food and supplies today, I was just thinking someone should get this word out. Seems like everyone is buying donuts and cookies! Hearts in the right place, but now the mind should follow.

I’m sorry, but I think this is silly. I’m a big advocate of breastfeeding and cloth diapers, but that doesn’t mean I won’t give formula and Pampers to babies in need across Alabama. I just think given the severity of the situation right now this seems trivial.

We’re just giving people information and options. Why does that seem to offend you, Lacey?

Wait, so donate breast milk, or don’t donate breast milk?

I donated mine — I’m unselfish that way.

In light of the fact that this would be my “normal” diet, I know that, given the circumstances, I would be immeasurably appreciative of any kind of “natural” or “whole grain” donations. I’m sure that for some folks it wouldn’t matter, but for those of us who have chosen to eat a more “natural” diet, I can assure you that it matters. And I can assure you I will be donating whole grain pasta and other whole grain/natural food items!
