5th Alabama Regimental Band

The 5th Alabama Regimental Band will be part of the Civil War Battle on Saturday
and Sunday at Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park.

A roundup of events for Memorial Day weekend in the Birmingham area …

• The American Village will pay tribute to the veterans of Operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom and Noble Eagle, with opening ceremony at 11:30 a.m. Memorial Day and salute to fallen heroes at 3:30 p.m.. $5, free for active military members, veterans and age 4 and younger. Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park will have two events this weekend. 12632 Confederate Pkwy., McCalla [map], (205) 477-5711. Park admission is $5, $3 for age 62 and older, $2 for age 6 to 11 and free for age 5 and younger.

  • The 12th annual Civil War Battle and Living History Reenactment will feature more than 500 participants, along with military demonstrations, food in the style of the era and the 5th Alabama Regimental Band. The camps open at 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, and the battles take place at 2 p.m. both days.
  • The Gene Clements Memorial Lucky Ducky Derby is a fund-raiser for Children’s Hospital of Alabama. The race is at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

Oak Mountain State Park will have a Memorial Day bug race starting at 10 a.m., plus a nature program at the Treetop Nature Trail. Park admission is $3, $1 for age 62 and older and age 6 to 11, free for age 5 and younger. 200 Pelham Heights Road, Pelham [map]. Pickin’ Up the Pieces Tornado Relief Concert. Free, but donations of blankets, ethnic hair products, toiletries, baby items, nonperishable food items and other goods request for the Salvation Army.
